Today we are having a cookout with our friends. What are healthy choices at a cookout? First and foremost, always volunteer to bring a dish. Then you know it's low-fat (or at least I hope that's what you would prepare!). I'm not kidding, if I know it's going to be hot dogs and fatty hamburgers I bring a Boca Burger or grilled chicken. This is a much healthier option. If I've forgotten to bring my own protein then I've even done a bun, lettuce, mustard, tomatoe, pickles, and a slice of cheese as my protein. I usually bring a salad that has mixed greens, fat-free feta, and cranberries in it. I bring a bag of pine nuts for those that want to put them on their individual salads. Pine nuts are a healthy fat but I'd rather have light dressing or a glass of wine instead since I can only do one additional fat per day. If you're bringing a side dish then make potato or broccoli salad with light or fat-free mayo. But, if you have a bun with your protein that is now your starch. A lot of times I just eat the grilled chicken or Boca plain so I can have a scoop of a side dish. Baked beans can be low in fat but extremely high in sugar so beware!
