She Said: Health Axiom #2: There Are No Bad Foods, Just Bad Amounts

Dr. B,

To think all the time I’ve spent chasing old guys driving Ferraris has been wasted since they’re most likely prostate gland-challenged. I’ll confine my man chasing efforts to those single, just over 40 alpha males with plentiful bank accounts. Of which there are precisely zero.

Which brings me to Leslie’s Health Axiom #2: There Are No Bad Foods, Just Bad Amounts.

The consistent message we hear about healthy eating is that diets don’t work. I know they don’t work because there’s always an element of restriction. Whether it’s chocolate or dairy foods or burgers, if you follow a diet, you usually can’t eat your favorite foods.

So it is no wonder diets fail. Humans can’t cope with that amount of restriction. Even if you lose weight on a diet, the weight almost always returns.

So don’t deny yourself the foods you love. And yes there’s a catch; there’s always a catch. Enjoy your favorite foods in small amounts. We discussed moderation earlier in the week but I’m going to take it one step further. Eat only tiny amounts of your favorite foods. And the key is to savor the taste.

I love dark chocolate. Always have and always will. But I have a bad habit of trying to savor tiny bits of dark chocolate while I’m driving. Not a cool move. Besides managing to smear chocolate all over steering wheel, I don’t savor the taste. And I admit my driver’s seat sports more than a few chocolate stains. (Note to self: never wear white pants while driving.)

To really enjoy tiny amounts of your favorite food I recommend sitting down in a quiet place. Let one small bite linger on your tongue and really enjoy the taste. Think about how delicious it is and how slim you’ll be by only eating a bite.

Then avoid the temptation of binging on an entire bag of the stuff. I hide all dark chocolate in file cabinets at the office since office peer pressure works wonders for my eating habits. And I keep my house chocolate-free.

And if tofu is your favorite food, well how nice for you.  Endless amounts of it won’t wind up on your thighs for 10 years.

OK you three readers out there, what do you have to add to Axiom #2?
